PROLOGUE:

Quite often when you meet people not in the know and start chatting with them about Classic Cars they will come to the closing remark of: " Now that must be an expensive Hobby!" The answer is as ever so often in live: Yes and No.."

THE AIM:

Now let's find out whether they are right or not. In fact your attitude will make all the difference. Normally people look at Classic Cars always with the intention to improve the condition or restore them completely. When such a project will follow your wildest fantasies a lot of money will disappear in no time at all. So let's embark on a journey to explore the dark side of the moon. Our mission will be to buy and run a Classic Car on a shoestring, have fun with it without being robbed blind and.. making a profit when the time comes to sell. Follow the future reports to keep track of the project and find out for yourself whether we will celebrate or admit
defeat.

THE STRATEGY:

Before starting, please make sure to have some working place for the chosen car, some basic knowledge, tools and an understanding family at hand not to make the project a non starter right from the beginning.

The next step would be to listen, read, look and learn. Gat started by asking neighbours and friends, colleagues at work, people at filling
stations even some local shopkeeper might know about a possible target car/barn find. Take some time, investigate, set yourself a fixed limit of how much you would like to spend. Be patient and only strike when you are convinced to have a real opportunity at hands. And yes, do buy as cheap as possible.

WHAT CAR?:

This decision is very much driven by you personal choice and taste.

Certainly it is wiser to stay with common Classics than fall victim to some offbeat exotic machine. You might possibly go for a Mini, a VW Beetle a Citroen 2CV, Morris Minor, Triumph Herald, Trabant, Renault R8 or strech to an MGB GT. Certainly the fun factor but also the availability of (new or used) spare parts  should be considered. You would not enjoy searching the globe just for a lousy window winder that was missing.

Condition is also crucial: always prefer a sound body and mechanics that need mending over a project that imposes vice versa.

A whining gearbox can easily repaired. To weld up a broken chassis will call for more advanced skills. Stay open minded and flexible.
And if you cant get what you want you may well want what you can get.
